Description
Turnberry Lighthouse from the 9th green of the Ailsa golf course at Turnberry, Ayrshire, Scotland. The skyline of the Isle of Arran and Holy Isle can be seen on the horizon.
Turnberry Lighthouse stands 24m high and has warned ships of the nearby Bristo Rock since 1873. It is now part of the Trump Turnberry golf complex and houses a small but comfortable café at the half way point of the golf course. The lighthouse sits on top of the ruins of Turnberry Castle, which was an impressive fortified home and harbour in the late 13th century.
It is the childhood home and probable birthplace of Robert the Bruce, the King of Scots. Robert ordered the demolition of the castle in 1310 to prevent it’s reoccupation by English forces during the first war of Scottish Independence. It was never rebuilt.
